Robert Walsh, our top IOM Skipper has just returned from a trip to Thailand, following an invitation from the Thai authorities to compete in the King’s Cup, as part of King Rama IX’s birthday celebrations.
There were 36 competitors, representing 14 countries around the world with 12 entries from Thailand. Robert was one of two British Competitors. The Class of yacht sailed was the “International One Metre”, or “IOM” for short. Robert and two other skippers in the competition are “IOM” World Champions, Robert gaining his title in Israel in 2013.
Racing on the first weekend took place in Bangkok, on the lake in the Royal Park of King Rama, and was won by Robert. For the second weekend the venue was the Ocean Marina Yacht Club at Pattaya, where racing took place on the sea. Here Robert finished in second place.
At the Prize Presentation Ceremony Robert received a trophy for winning in Bangkok, a runners up trophy for second place in Pattaya and two trophies for being the overall winner of the two competitions, one of which is the perpetual trophy which remains in Thailand.
This has been a most successful year for Robert as he also won the “IOM” Class National Championships in both the UK and Brazil.
