Five Fleetwood yachts entered the Model Yachting AssociationNational Vane “A” Class Championship held at Gosport in Hampshire.The yacht “Loki”, sailed by Fleetwood members, David and Alan Bell, finished in second place overall and received the Wing & WingCup for winning the most downwind legs. In third place wereFleetwood members, Graham Butler and Keith Wiseman, sailing theyacht “Dignity” and received the Little Portugal Cup for being thehighest placed contestants who had not previously won this Championship event.
The Fleetwood “A” Team consisting of David, Alan, Robert andMargaret Bell, Peter Whiteside and Eddie Greenwood won the teamevent and received the Neptune Trophy. Peter Whiteside won theVeteran Skipper’s Trophy. The Fleetwood “A” Team yachts were alldesigned by Fleetwood member, John Simpson, who also designed theyacht “Yell O Pearl”, the National Championship winner, sailed by Martin Roberts and Bernie McNulty of the Birkenhead Club. The yachts in this competition were around 7 to 8 feet longand about 9 feet tall, not controlled by radio, and representedeight UK and one Dutch Clubs.
