Fleetwood members finish in top 10 in 3 National Championships

It’s been a busy 5 weeks for the club with 3 National Championships run by, & raced in by our members.

First, over the late summer Bank Holiday all the IOM superstars invaded for their championship which had to be cancelled last year.  With originally a full entry of 84, 76 boats actually arrived from all over the U.K. and Sweden, Norway & Ireland. After 3 days of hard racing Rob Walsh finished a creditable 4th. Wind conditions were variable throughout the weekend. The Friday saw the competitors sailing in C or D rigs with many of the skippers experiencing a traditional Fleetwood breeze for the first time.

Then 2 weeks later it was the turn of the R/C Lasers, and although we had only 14 boats on the Saturday a great day’s racing in a beautiful sunny, windy & wavy conditions was experienced.  Sunday gave us no wind & therefore no racing.  The Championship was won by our own Shaun Holbeche, adding another National title to his collection.

Then, this last weekend, it was the turn of the DF95’s for their National.  Initially we had a full entry of 84 from all over the world but unfortunately Covid restrictions prevented the USA & AUS and some SWE entries from travelling  so we ended up with 63 actually racing.  After 3 full days of racing we had the result decided by just 0.1 of a point handing the Championship to Craig Richards from Windrush club.  r John Taylor finished a creditable 6th, the top club skipper. Alan Smith (Smiffy to his friends) won the “Percy Prize” for Perseverance.  This award is presented to the lowest placed sailor who completed all their races. As always these events don’t happen by magic, so I would like to thank all those who helped and mention Ian Hawtin who whilst helping to organise the observers for the DF95 event, bought a boat & so will be joining us racing DF95’s . (as well as his IOM, Laser, & DF65!!)

Also in between the Lasers & the DF weekends there was the RG65 Nationals at Keighley & yours truly managed 4th place sailing a borrowed boat from Mick Parkington.
