Topham Cup Vane 36R 15th March 2025

Despite several of our regular Vane 36R skippers racing IOMs at Scarborough, we had a record entry of 8 yachts for this our first Vane Sailing event of the year. At start time the wind was light and coming from the NE, so it was a run out from the Clubhouse and a close hauled return was expected. However on attempting the return board there wasn’t a ripple on the lake but the fleet carried on regardless, with great difficulty!

By the time we were back at the Clubhouse end of the lake a slight breeze was blowing from the NW, so the scoring was changed to 3 out and 2 back. Three heats were completed by lunchtime. After  lunch the wind had strengthened, still from the NW, giving a normal beat out. A couple of yachts changed down to 2nd suits  and one withdrew from the competition.

The remaining heats were completed with the 7 remaining yachts.

Rosebowl Final Round

A cracking turnout of boats including the reappearance of a few visitors the Bennett’s and George Barclay

18 boats made the start line. The morning session was a stiff A breeze and times edging the very top of the rig.

The wind fired through the racing and became light a holey in the last few races.

Racing between the front 4 was tight in the afternoon session with often 5 lboat lengths between first and fourth.

Alan Bennett had the best of the morning session with his Britpop and Derek in the afternoon winning the last 4 in the lighter stuff.

Neil D mixing it with the front two with his Britpop along with Mark giving his alioth some time in the water to see what it could do.

Well sailed Alan taking the win, congrats to George for winning a race after getting an unbelievable start where nobody could catch him!!

Two and a half laps of the lake was sailed making for a lively, warm, sunny day out.

Overall, congratulations to Derek on winning the Jim Rosebowl ahead of Mark in second place.
